City to Surf Success

$4481 were raised for AFTDA during City to Surf last Sunday.

A big shout out to Jane and Grace Dean from Tumut, NSW who raised the majority of these funds. Jane and Grace ran in memory of Stephen, their husband and father, who passed away earlier this year with frontotemporal dementia. Sunday was also a very special day for them as the race happened to be on Stephen’s birthday.

Over the past 10 years, the Dean family has been very supportive of FRONTIER and have organised numerous fundraising activities to support research on FTD, and we are very grateful for their continuing support.

They have run in 2024, 2025 and now in 2026 and this year they raised $4481

THANK YOU!!!
The Peppermints ran their fund raising event on the 12th February 2026: The Mint Archives

It was a powerful night of Australian music which featured The Peppermints alongside The Noise, Harriet Wraith, and Erica Avenue, this unforgettable evening showcased some of Melbourne’s most compelling women in music which raised nearly $5000.

The Mint Archives was a very special live event presented by The Peppermints, celebrating the music and influence of the alternative-rock band Mint, led by the late Melinda Wood. More than twenty years after Mint’s original releases, their catalogue is being re-imagined for a new audience in a moving tribute that honours both musical legacy and lived experience with FTD. In 2017, Melinda was diagnosed with behavioural-variant frontotemporal dementia (bvFTD) at the age of 47. Eight years on, her daughter Eden Beveridge-Wood and bandmate Monika Jurisic collaborated with the Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association to raise funds for support to those diagnosed with FTD and related disorders, their carers and families.

Dominic’s Marathon for FTD

We’re so grateful to Dominic Talimanidis, a dad of three, restaurant owner, and passionate runner who took on the Melbourne Marathon to raise awareness and funds for the Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association (AFTDA) in 2025 raising over $7000.

Hi,

I’m Dominic Talimanidis, a proud father of three beautiful girls (Poppy, Sophia and Maggie), the owner of Ipsos restaurant in the beautiful coastal town of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road, and a passionate trail runner with a deep appreciation for the beautiful Otway rain forest I’m lucky enough to live in.

This year, I’ve set myself a challenge to run the Melbourne Marathon in under 3 hours in support of a very important cause.

I’m raising awareness (and hopefully some funds) for the Australian Frontal Temporal Dementia Association (AFTDA) a group supporting families and individuals affected by this cruel, often misunderstood form of dementia. FTD strikes younger people and can bring with it confusing, confronting behavioural and emotional changes. For many families, the road to diagnosis is long and unclear, leaving loved ones in the dark about what’s really happening.

In pursuit of achieving a sub-3-hour marathon time I’m completing a 20-week program with six sessions per week. My wife is counting down the days until I’m running less and pulling my weight more around the house! However, it will feel like a more worthwhile endeavour if I am able to help even one family feel less alone in their FTD journey.

If you can support my run, by donating or sharing, I’d be deeply grateful.

Thank you,
Dom

For the second year, FRONTIER, the frontotemporal dementia research team at the Brain & Mind Centre of the University of Sydney raised funds for the Australian Frontotemporal Dementia Association (AFTDA) by running the City2Surf.

A team of six runners including FRONTIER members Olivier Piguet, Kirrie Ballard, Ramon Landin-Romero, Siobhan Shaw and supporters Tracey Crawcour and Ryoko Cama will braved the 14 kilometre run on Sunday 11 August.

You can still donate to FRONTIER’s fundraiser post-run!

Star AFTDA fundraiser
Daisy Dumas

Daisy ran the 2023 Sydney Marathon to raise money for the AFTDA. It was a very personal event for Daisy as her mother was diagnosed with FTD. Daisy raised over $12,000 for the AFTDA and her amazing fundraising has made it possible for the AFTDA to upgrade our website and support more families living with FTD.

Thank you so much Daisy!
